Among other things, Trump is demanding that Iran limit the range of ballistic missiles and refrain from enriching uranium.
Araghchi explained that defense strategies and missile systems would never be the subject of negotiations. Iran would maintain its defense capabilities and even expand them if necessary. The chief diplomat warned the USA that this time a military conflict could go beyond a bilateral war.
Negotiations must be conducted on the basis of mutual interests and mutual respect, said the chief diplomat. No meeting with US representatives had yet been prepared. The content, format, location and date would have to be clarified before negotiations.
Turkey as mediator?
In view of the tensions, Turkey is trying to position itself as a potential mediator. The resumption of negotiations is of "crucial importance" in order to avoid a "destructive" war in the region, said Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan. Iran was ready for a dialog, but only under "fair and just conditions", explained Araghchi.
Turkish media, including the daily newspaper "Hürriyet", reported that President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had asked his US counterpart Trump for high-level trilateral talks with Iran. Turkish sources confirmed these efforts.
