Araghchi went on to explain that Iran reserves all options in accordance with the UN Charter and the right to legitimate self-defense in order to protect its sovereignty, its interests and its people.
On Sunday night, the USA intervened in the war against Iran alongside Israel and, according to US President Donald Trump, attacked nuclear facilities. These included the well-fortified underground uranium enrichment facility at Fordo.
Araghchi had recently been negotiating with the USA about the nuclear program under the mediation of the Gulf state of Oman. Most recently, the talks stalled over the central issue of uranium enrichment. The USA demanded that it be completely abandoned, while the Iranian leadership has defined this as a red line.
The minister accused the USA of having committed a serious violation of the UN Charter, international law and the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty with the attack.
The Iranian mission to the United Nations called for an emergency meeting at the UN Security Council in light of the US attack, as reported by state radio.
