Iran's navy: 26 ships pass through Strait of Hormuz

This was done in coordination with the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Navy, according to a report by the Iranian news agency Tasnim. The ships involved were oil tankers, freighters and other merchant vessels.

In the course of the war, the Iranian leadership said it had set up a control authority to regulate shipping traffic in the strait. The Persian Gulf Straits Authority (PGSA) is calling on shipping companies to coordinate. Passage without authorization is considered illegal, according to a post by the newly created authority on X.

Iran's armed forces took control of the Strait of Hormuz, which is important for energy trade, shortly after the start of the war. Threats, controls and attacks on ships brought traffic in the strait to a virtual standstill. The result was a significant rise in energy and fuel prices worldwide. According to Iran, the strait is now also mined.

Tehran always emphasizes that the Strait of Hormuz is not blocked. In reality, however, shipping companies have to coordinate with Iranian contact points and are then only allowed to pass through a corridor close to the Iranian coast. The Iranian leadership charges high fees for this. According to international law experts, such fees violate the right to transit passage.
