In Iran, the parliament, which is dominated by conservative hardliners, has withdrawn its confidence in the finance minister. The MPs voted by a large majority to remove the moderate Minister of Economic Affairs and Finance, Abdolnasser Hemmati, as reported by Iranian media.

The vote of no confidence was preceded by a dispute over the economic crisis and inflation that has been going on for years. Most recently, the country's own currency, the rial, had fallen sharply in value against foreign currencies such as the dollar.

Like the moderate-conservative President Massud Peseschkian, Hemmati belongs to the so-called reformist camp. Their supporters are committed to maintaining the status quo of the Islamic Republic and are striving for reforms within the political system. Their conservative rivals, the so-called fundamentalists or hardliners, form the second major camp. Parties hardly play a role in Iran's political system.
