US President Donald Trump had previously spoken out in favor of a change of government in Iran. "It's time to look for new leadership in Iran," Trump told the news portal "Politico". Those in power in Tehran based their rule on oppression and violence.
At the same time, Peseschkian blamed international sanctions alone for the economic crisis in the country. If the people of Iran are confronted with hardship and difficulties in their lives, then this is primarily due to the "long-standing hostility and inhumane sanctions imposed by the government of the United States and its allies".
The USA and the European Union have been imposing sanctions against Iran for years. The reasons for this include Iran's nuclear and missile programs, its support for armed groups in the region such as the terrorist organization Hamas, the Lebanese Hezbollah and the Yemeni Houthi militia. Iran is also accused of serious human rights violations.
Structural mismanagement within the country is another cause of the economic misery. In addition, there is corruption and a lack of economic reforms - factors that are regularly highlighted by international experts.
