US and Israeli naval forces have held a joint exercise in the Red Sea. The armies of both countries described the maneuver as routine. However, the arrival of a participating US destroyer in the Israeli port city of Eilat took place against a backdrop of regional tensions.

Threats between Trump and Iran
US President Donald Trump has repeatedly threatened the Iranian leadership with military strikes, partly because of the brutal crackdown by state repressive forces against demonstrators during the recent mass protests. Thousands, if not tens of thousands of people are said to have been killed. Iran has threatened retaliatory strikes against Israel and the USA. However, there is now talk of possible negotiations between the USA and Iran.
Expansion of the US military presence in the region
The US military has significantly expanded its presence in the region since the beginning of January, for example with the aircraft carrier "USS Abraham Lincoln" and its escort ships.
The Israeli army announced that the arrival of the US guided missile destroyer "USS Delbert D. Black" in Eilat underlined "the close cooperation between the two navies and the respective armed forces". On the Israeli side, the corvette "INS Eilat" was involved in the exercise, which was held on Sunday.
The US Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, which has since left the Israeli port again, is equipped for air, sea and anti-submarine defense as well as precision attacks on land targets, among other things.
