The Israeli air force says it has attacked a weapons depot near the Syrian capital Damascus. The depot in Deir Ali, 25 kilometers south of Damascus, belonged to the Islamist Hamas in the Gaza Strip, according to a statement from the Israeli military. The terrorist organization, which was closely allied with the ousted Syrian leadership around Bashar al-Assad, had intended to use the weapons stored there for attacks against Israeli soldiers.

The attribution of the weapons depot to Hamas could not initially be independently verified. The London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which monitors the situation in Syria with a network of activists, confirmed the attack on the depot. No people were injured in the attack. The bombardment triggered heavy explosions and flames shot up.

Israel has significantly increased its attacks on suspected weapons depots and supply routes for Hamas and the Lebanese Hezbollah militia since December 8 last year. On that day, Syrian rebels overthrew Assad. He then fled to Moscow.
