Israel has commemorated its war dead and victims of terror with nationwide siren wailing. For the second year in a row, Remembrance Day is overshadowed by the war in the Gaza Strip. "Once again, we are celebrating Remembrance Day in the shadow of a terrible failure that has affected the State of Israel to the core," said Chief of General Staff Ejal Zamir - presumably referring to the inability of the security forces to prevent the Hamas massacre on October 7, 2023.

25,420 soldiers and Jewish underground fighters have been killed since 1860, according to the Ministry of Defense. The count begins with the immigration of Jews into what is now Israel, long before the state was founded in 1948.
The Gaza war was triggered by the unprecedented massacre carried out by terrorists from Hamas and other Islamist groups in southern Israel. They killed around 1,200 people, took 251 others hostage and abducted them to the Gaza Strip. According to Palestinian figures, more than 52,300 Palestinians have been killed in the ensuing war. The figure does not distinguish between fighters and civilians. Meanwhile, 24 hostages and the bodies of 35 people kidnapped from Israel are still being held in the Gaza Strip.
According to media reports, 850 Israeli soldiers and 82 security forces have been killed since October 7, 2023. This includes those killed on the day of the massacre itself and those killed during the ground offensive that began three weeks later, as well as those killed in the war with the Lebanese Hezbollah militia.
