According to Israel, it has agreed to a US proposal for an extension of the Gaza ceasefire. In return for the release of hostages by the Islamist Hamas, the ceasefire would be extended for the duration of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan and the Jewish festival of Passover, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office announced after night-time security consultations. According to the Times of Israel, Ramadan ends on March 29 and Passover on April 20. According to Israel, the Islamist Hamas has not yet accepted the proposal.

According to the proposal, half of the hostages remaining in the Gaza Strip - both alive and dead - would be released on the first day of the extended ceasefire, Netanyahu's office said in a statement. The remaining hostages would be handed over at the end of the period if a permanent ceasefire is reached. This is a plan proposed by US special envoy Steve Witkoff. Hamas has so far rejected it, according to reports. Should the terrorist organization change its position, Israel would immediately begin negotiations on all details of the plan.
