The Israeli army is stepping up its activities in the embattled Gaza Strip, according to Chief of General Staff Ejal Zamir. The Islamist terrorist organization Hamas is under great pressure, said Zamir during a troop visit to the city of Chan Junis in the south of the coastal region. The aim of intensifying the fighting was to achieve the declared war aims: to completely defeat Hamas and free hostages still being held.

However, there is increasing criticism among the Israeli population: according to surveys, many are in favor of an end to the Gaza war.
