107 trucks with relief supplies such as flour, other foodstuffs, medical equipment and medicines arrived in the coastal strip on Thursday, the responsible authority Cogat announced on Friday morning. According to the information provided, this is humanitarian aid from the United Nations and the international community.
Israel had not allowed any more aid deliveries since the beginning of March. The country accuses Hamas of reselling the aid in order to finance its fighters and weapons. Aid has been flowing again since Monday. According to aid workers, however, the quantities that have arrived so far are nowhere near enough to alleviate the great need of the people on the ground. The UN and aid organizations are warning of a famine in the coastal strip.
Distribution is complicated
There are also difficulties with the distribution of aid. "Due to insecurity, the risk of looting, delays in the coordination of permits and the unsuitable routes provided by the Israeli armed forces, which are not suitable for the transportation of goods, there are still considerable problems in the loading and dispatch of goods," said the UN emergency aid office Ocha.
According to the United Nations, around 500 truckloads a day would be needed to guarantee supplies to the approximately two million Palestinians in the sealed-off coastal area.
