The Israeli army says it has attacked 85 Hezbollah militia targets in Lebanon within 24 hours. These included weapons depots, launching pads and other military infrastructure. The army justified the operation as a defense against threats to Israeli civilians and soldiers in southern Lebanon.

An underground facility in the Bekaa Valley was destroyed, which was allegedly being used by Hezbollah to manufacture weapons, it added. Israeli forces also attacked Hezbollah militia fighters in southern Lebanon.

The army accuses Hezbollah of having fired several rockets at soldiers in southern Lebanon in recent days. There have been no casualties.

The information cannot currently be independently verified.

The Hezbollah shelling was preceded by an Israeli attack in the southern suburbs of Beirut, in which the commander of Hezbollah's elite Radwan unit was killed.

The current ceasefire agreement allows Israel to take defensive measures against planned, imminent or ongoing attacks, but prohibits offensive operations on Lebanese territory. The parties to the conflict accuse each other of violating this agreement.
