For the first time since the start of the Iran war a month ago, a missile has been fired at Israel from Yemen. The Israeli army announced on Telegram early this morning that its air defense was in action. According to media reports, the missile was successfully intercepted and there were no casualties or damage.

The Iran-backed militant Islamist Houthi militia operates in Yemen. It had announced its "full and unwavering solidarity" with Tehran. It was recently feared that the militia would interfere in the Iran war from Yemen.

The Houthis claimed responsibility for the attack. They had fired a volley of ballistic missiles against "sensitive military targets" in southern Israel, reported the Huthi-affiliated TV station Al-Masirah, citing a spokesperson. According to the report, the militia announced its intention to continue its attacks.

The Houthi militia had already repeatedly attacked merchant ships in the Red Sea and the adjacent Gulf of Aden to the south in the past. The Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden are considered one of the most important trade routes in the world. They lie between north-east Africa and the Arabian Peninsula and form a central link between the Mediterranean (via the Suez Canal) and the Indian Ocean (via the Bab al-Mandab Strait).
