Following the suspension of humanitarian aid deliveries to the Gaza Strip, Israel is also suspending the supply of electricity to the blockaded coastal strip with immediate effect. Israeli Energy Minister Eli Cohen announced that he had signed an order to this effect. The aim is to exert pressure on the Islamist terrorist organization Hamas, which is still holding dozens of hostages.

"We will use all means at our disposal to ensure that all hostages are returned and we will ensure that Hamas is no longer in Gaza the day after," Cohen said in a video message.

A week ago, following the expiry of the first phase of a ceasefire, Israel had already ordered a complete halt to aid deliveries in order to put Hamas under pressure. Aid organizations have warned of dramatic consequences for the two million inhabitants of the coastal strip.

The power supply to the Gaza Strip via lines from Israel and Egypt had been patchy for years. After the start of the Gaza war a year and a half ago, the only power station in the Gaza Strip also ceased production. Many people make do with solar energy and generators.
