It had previously declared that it had killed the commander of the Basij units, Brigadier General Gholamresa Soleimani. Under his leadership, they were responsible for the bloody suppression of the protests in Iran in January. There was initially no confirmation of Soleimani's death from Iran.
Soleimani's killing and the recent attacks caused "significant and lasting damage" to the militia's capabilities, the statement continued. According to Israel's army, it had already attacked militia control centers during the course of the Iran war. The militia then moved its activities to other centers, which the military then also targeted, Israel's army now explained. Israel also accused the militia of operating in public spaces in the center of Tehran. The information could not initially be independently verified.
