According to the Israeli army, it flew more than 1,400 airstrikes against targets in the Gaza Strip in December 2024 alone. The attacks were carried out by fighter jets, helicopters and drones. They were based on information provided by ground troops, the military announced on its website. The targets included fighters and squads of the Islamist Hamas and its allies, tunnels, tunnel entrances, observation and sniper positions and weapons depots, it added.

According to this information, the Gaza Strip was subjected to around 45 Israeli airstrikes per day last December. Israel is internationally criticized for the high number of casualties among the Palestinian civilian population. Many civilian casualties, including women and children, are repeatedly mourned, especially after airstrikes.

According to the Palestinian health authorities on Wednesday, 45,553 Palestinians have been killed since the start of the Gaza war on October 7, 2023. The figures make no distinction between combatants and civilians. Israel claims that it warns the civilian population before attacks and calls on them to leave the area of operations.

At the same time, it is taking extensive additional measures to minimize the damage to the civilian population. Neither side's claims can be independently verified. The war was triggered by the massacre by Hamas and other extremists from Gaza in Israel on October 7, 2023, in which 1,200 people were killed and 250 taken hostage.
