Israel's Supreme Court has issued a temporary injunction suspending the closure of the army radio station sought by the government. This applies until the court's final decision on the lawsuits filed against the closure, it said. The court's injunction came around a week after the government cabinet unanimously approved Defense Minister Israel Katz's controversial proposal to close Galei Zahal by March 1 of next year.

Katz had justified this by saying that the channel, which is considered critical, broadcasts "political and divisive content that does not correspond with the values of the Israeli army". The station is considered historic and has been broadcasting for 75 years. The opposition criticized the cabinet's decision as a violation of freedom of expression and an attempt to control the media. The government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is also campaigning for the closure of the respected public broadcaster Kan.
