Netanyahu told Zamir that a great responsibility now rests on his shoulders. Israel is engaged in a long war, the results of which will affect future generations. The commander of the US troops in the Middle East, General Michael Erik Kurilla, was also present at the handover ceremony.

Zamir's predecessor Herzi Halevi had announced his resignation due to the catastrophic failure of the army during the Hamas massacre on October 7, 2023. Zamir was previously Director General of the Ministry of Defense.
