The parliament of the EU and NATO member state Slovenia has elected the right-wing conservative politician Janez Jansa as Prime Minister. According to the STA news agency, 51 MPs voted for him, while 36 voted against him. Jansa wants to form a minority government with his Slovenian Democratic Party (SDS) and other right-wing parties, which will be supported from outside by the right-wing populist group Resnica (Truth).

Jansa became his country's head of government for the fourth time, replacing the left-liberal Robert Golob, who has been in power for the past four years. His Freedom Movement (GS) had won the parliamentary elections in March, narrowly ahead of Jansa's SDS, but no longer had a majority with its previous left-wing coalition partners.
In his pre-election speech in parliament, Jansa said that his future government would promote decentralization and the reduction of bureaucracy and fight corruption. The right-wing conservative had already governed from 2004 to 2008, from 2012 to 2013 and from 2020 to 2022. His terms in office were overshadowed by corruption scandals and attacks on independent media and dissenters, each of which ended with him being voted out of office.
Even before his current election, Jansa had already made threats against the media, civil organizations and trade unions. Cyclists from the alternative political scene demonstrated in front of parliament, accusing Jansa of breaking election promises and collaborating with a private Israeli secret service.
