Japan's Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba has announced "appropriate" steps in response to the punitive tariffs on car imports announced by US President Donald Trump. "All options will be considered", he said.

"We need to think about appropriate measures after this announcement," Ishiba said in parliament on Thursday. He did not initially provide any further details.

Government spokesman Yoshimasa Hayashi told media representatives that the latest punitive tariffs and other comprehensive trade restrictions imposed by the US government "could have a significant impact on economic relations between Japan and the US, as well as on the global economy and the multilateral trading system".

Trump had previously announced punitive tariffs of 25 percent on car imports from abroad. The tariffs are to apply to all cars not produced in the USA and will come into force on April 2.
