According to the President of the Jewish Religious Community, Oskar Deutsch, the Jewish community in Austria views the election triumph of the right-wing FPÖ with concern.

"The electoral success of the FPÖ has a threatening effect on many," Deutsch said in a statement. The FPÖ is not a right-wing party like many others in Europe, but the political arm of the German nationalist fraternities, many of which are still linked to National Socialism today, Deutsch continued.

Only recently, FPÖ politicians had attended a funeral at which an SS allegiance song had been sung. "There are incidents like this every few weeks. They are part of the FPÖ's DNA and remind us why we can speak of basement Nazis in the FPÖ," said Deutsch. In public, FPÖ politicians pretend to be democrats, in the cellars of the fraternities they unpack Nazi songbooks.

Deutsch put the electoral success of the right-wing populists into perspective by taking an overall view. "More than 71 percent of voters voted for parties that explicitly opposed the FPÖ's participation in government."

The FPÖ achieved its best result to date in the parliamentary elections on Sunday. With around 29 percent, it is clearly in first place. All other parties have so far ruled out cooperation either with the FPÖ in general or at least with its leader Herbert Kickl.
