"If we don't solve this problem, if we don't find a future for Israelis and Palestinians and a relationship between the Arab and Muslim world and Israel, we are doomed," the monarch told the British broadcaster BBC. If this issue is not resolved, the conflict will start all over again.
Abdullah spoke to the BBC before his departure for the summit in Egypt with US President Donald Trump, which is intended to mark the end of the Gaza war. A declaration was solemnly signed, but it did not contain any concrete steps beyond the current ceasefire between Hamas and Israel. The two warring parties were not represented at the summit.
There is no mention of a Palestinian state, which more and more countries have recognized in recent months, in the Sharm el-Sheikh declaration. It merely mentions that lasting peace in the region is possible if the security, dignity and basic human rights of both Israelis and Palestinians are protected.
