The military authorities in Mali granted the junta leader a five-year presidential mandate on Thursday. The mandate can be extended "as often as necessary" and without elections.

The move was unanimously supported by the 131 members of the National Transitional Council present, as reported by an AFP journalist. This clears the way for General Assimi Goita to lead the West African country until at least 2030. Only the junta leader himself still has to approve the plan.

The military government had originally announced that it would return to civilian rule in March 2024. Most recently, Mali's military leadership had repeatedly restricted freedoms in order to consolidate its power.

Mali has been plagued by massive violence for more than a decade. Two military coups have taken place in the country since 2020. In August 2020, military forces led by Goita overthrew the then head of state Ibrahim Boubacar. In May 2021, Goita then deposed the civilian head of a transitional government and appointed himself interim president.
