Following violent protests against his government, Kenya's President William Ruto has dismissed almost the entire cabinet. Foreign Minister Musalia Mudavadi was excluded, Ruto said in the speech at his official residence.

Accordingly, the Attorney General was also dismissed with immediate effect. The duties of the ministers would be taken over by the state secretaries until a new cabinet is appointed. "I will immediately conduct extensive consultations with the various sectors and political groups with the aim of forming a broad-based government," said Ruto. He promised a "lean, low-cost, effective" new government.
The protests over the past three weeks have been directed against a controversial tax law, Ruto's conduct in office, corruption and waste of public funds. Demonstrators also stormed the parliament. At least 39 people were killed when police fired live ammunition at the demonstrators.
