CDU politician Julia Klöckner is the new President of the German Bundestag. At the constituent session of the national parliament, she received 382 out of 622 votes cast, with 204 votes against and 31 abstentions. The 52-year-old Christian Democrat succeeds the Social Democrat Bärbel Bas, who had presided over the Bundestag since the 2021 election. She is only the fourth woman to hold this position in the history of the Federal Republic of Germany. Traditionally, the strongest parliamentary group in the Bundestag occupies this office, which is the second-highest in Germany in terms of protocol after the Federal President. Chancellor candidate Friedrich Merz's CDU/CSU has 208 out of 630 seats in the new Bundestag. Klöckner was Federal Minister of Agriculture in the last cabinet of Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) between spring 2018 and the end of 2021. From 2012 to 2022, she was deputy federal chairwoman of the CDU. In her home state of Rhineland-Palatinate, she was leader of the opposition in the state parliament for several years. She was elected German Wine Queen in 1995.
