The Greek parliament has elected 65-year-old conservative lawyer Konstantinos Tasoulas as the new President of Greece for a five-year term of office. He succeeds Ekaterini Sakellaropoulou, who was the first woman to hold the office since 2020.
Tasoulas' term of office begins on March 13. The president has a purely representative function in Greece. The vote was broadcast on Greek television.
Tasoulas, who was born in 1959 in the north-western Greek city of Ioannina, was elected almost exclusively with the votes of the ruling conservative party Nea Dimokratia (ND). According to the parliamentary presidency, 160 members of the 300-seat parliament voted for him.
