Russia is interested in a peaceful settlement of the conflict between the USA and Venezuela. "Of course we want everything to remain peaceful and prevent new conflicts from arising in the region," said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov in Moscow, according to the state news agency Tass.

Is Maduro asking for military aid from Moscow?

Tass called the statements the Kremlin's response to a report in the US newspaper "Washington Post". According to the report, Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro is said to have asked Moscow for military aid, in particular air defense. Russia and Maduro's authoritarian oil state Venezuela in Latin America have concluded a partnership agreement. It came into force last week, but - as far as is known - does not provide for military assistance.

For weeks, US forces have been repeatedly attacking boats allegedly loaded with drugs in the Caribbean and Pacific. The leadership of US President Donald Trump accuses Venezuela in particular of being involved in the smuggling. The US military has deployed additional warships to the region, which not only the Venezuelan government sees as a threatening gesture.
