The Russian leadership has criticized the massive rearmament of the European Union (EU). "The militarization of Europe is an extremely dangerous trend," said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov in Moscow.

It does not lead to détente, nor does it restore trust. "Nor does it make Europe safer." Many Europeans do not like it, but almost all politicians are following the mainstream, the spokesman said, according to reports from Russian news agencies.
Peskov was reacting to a decision made by the EU heads of state and government in Brussels on Thursday. They had agreed to significantly strengthen Europe's defense readiness over the next five years.
The background to this is Moscow's war of aggression against Ukraine and Russian armaments plans, which have raised security concerns among many Europeans. At the same time, Europeans are expanding their own defense capabilities because the military protection provided by the USA - particularly under President Donald Trump - is increasingly being called into question. Over the next four years, 800 billion euros are to be mobilized for this purpose.
