The Kremlin sees the fierce accusations from Washington against its long-standing ally Kiev as a logical emotional reaction.

According to Russian news agencies, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said it was understandable that no one could remain indifferent if Ukraine refused to enter into political negotiations on a peace settlement. "Of course, because many cannot remain indifferent, this is echoed in emotional statements."

US President Donald Trump had previously called Ukrainian head of state Volodymyr Zelensky a dictator with a low rating and blamed him for the war of aggression launched by Moscow.

According to Peskov, this does not mean that the new US administration is taking a pro-Russian stance. This was a false perception, he said, after US representatives had previously described Kiev's desire to join NATO as just as unrealistic as the demand for a return to internationally recognized borders.

He was also unaware of any unofficial talks between representatives of the USA and Russia about Ukraine, which are said to have begun months ago in Switzerland, the Kremlin spokesman said in response to corresponding media reports. Peskov denied a further report that Moscow had demanded the return of NATO infrastructure from Eastern Europe during negotiations with the US delegation in Saudi Arabia. "This does not correspond to the facts," said the 57-year-old.
