The Kremlin does not expect a quick mediation success in the war against Ukraine if Donald Trump becomes president again in the USA. "I don't think there is a magic wand. It can't be done in one day," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Russian television. He was commenting on claims by ex-president and current Republican candidate Trump that he could end the Russian-Ukrainian conflict within a day.

Nevertheless, Peskov toyed with the idea. One could imagine "that the next president of the USA announces in his inauguration speech that the USA is committed to peace and will therefore end its support for Ukraine", said the spokesman. "Then perhaps something will change in thinking by the next morning, especially in Kiev." Peskov added in the interview for the program "Moscow. Kremlin. Putin", however, added that this was all purely hypothetical.

Moscow sees the USA as a party to the war

President Vladimir Putin's spokesman said that the USA was already very much part of the conflict through its arms supplies to Ukraine. The relationship between Moscow and Washington was therefore worse than it had been for decades. Officially, Peskov stuck to the line that Russia was not favoring anyone in the election campaign between Trump and candidate Kamala Harris from the Democratic Party.

Ukraine has been fending off a Russian invasion for two and a half years. It is receiving arms aid from many Western countries, but not enough to change the military situation in its favor. All of Moscow's demands for an end to the war are more or less tantamount to Ukraine's capitulation.
