Against the backdrop of the search for a diplomatic solution to the war in Ukraine, the Kremlin has criticized the political leadership of the EU as incompetent and ruled out negotiations with EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas. The EU leadership lacks forward-looking visionaries, complained Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov on Russian state television. "These are some uneducated, incompetent functionaries who cannot look into the future and understand the system of coordinates that exists today." The entire system of international relations is suffering as a result, he said.

For example, he argued, the EU had gone from being dependent on Russian oil and gas to being dependent on the USA. In his all-round attack on EU officials, Estonian foreign affairs representative Kallas in particular came in for criticism. "We will never discuss anything with her, nor will the Americans," claimed Peskov. Moscow will simply wait until she vacates her post.
Moscow's anger is primarily based on the Europeans' support for Ukraine, which has been attacked by Russia. Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin ordered the invasion of its neighbor in February 2022. To date, Russia has not achieved its war aims - partly because Ukraine has received Western aid. However, after Donald Trump took office as president in the USA, Kiev's strongest ally up to that point dropped out. Trump sees himself merely as a mediator in the war, which he promised to end within 24 hours before his election.
