According to the Kremlin, even the planned 18th EU sanctions package will not lead to an end to Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine. "Only logic and arguments can bring Russia to the negotiating table," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told Moscow state television. "It is impossible to push Russia by any kind of pressure or force."

Peskov expressed his conviction that the new sanctions package sought by the EU would ultimately be adopted. However, the tougher the punitive measures, the stronger the pushback would be. Sanctions are a "double-edged weapon", said Peskov. Moscow repeatedly claims that the EU itself suffers even more disadvantages as a result of the sanctions, for example by foregoing Russian raw materials.

Last Friday, the adoption of the EU's 18th sanctions package initially failed due to opposition from Slovakia. A new vote was postponed to an unspecified date.

Russia considers the sanctions to be illegal, said Peskov. "Obviously, after almost four years, we have a certain resistance. And we have already learned how to minimize the impact of such packages," he said.

The EU sanctions are primarily directed against the Russian economy and aim to deprive the country of the financial means to continue its war of aggression against Ukraine. Russia, on the other hand, repeatedly emphasizes that it has adapted its economy to the punitive measures. In addition, the raw materials power is circumventing the restrictions with the help of other countries and has massively expanded its arms production despite everything.
