The Kremlin believes that talks between Russia, Ukraine and the USA on ending the war are still in their infancy.

"It would be wrong to expect any major results," commented Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov on the first meeting, which took place last weekend in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates.

It was about difficult topics, Peskov said in Moscow, according to the state news agency Tass. "But the very fact that these contacts have begun constructively must be seen as positive."

Peskov: No friendly atmosphere possible

In the first direct negotiations between the warring parties in months, it was only agreed to continue the talks after a week. A date has not yet been set. Peskov contradicted reports from US representatives that there was an almost friendly atmosphere between the Ukrainians and Russians involved. "That is hardly possible at this stage," he said.

Did Trump promise anything in Alaska?

The Kremlin spokesman once again referred to an alleged "Anchorage formula" in which Russia's interests are set out. This refers to the summit meeting between US President Donald Trump and Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin in Alaska in August 2025. No agreement has been announced. However, Moscow is demanding that the Ukrainian army withdraw from areas in the east that it is still defending. Kiev rejects this.

German security expert Nico Lange wrote in Network X that it seems as if Trump made promises in Anchorage that he is now unable to keep. This is why the USA is urging Ukraine to make this renunciation.
