Amid the military escalation in the Middle East, several US military aircraft have crashed in the Gulf state of Kuwait, according to official reports there. The crews survived, according to a spokesman for the Kuwaiti Ministry of Defense. The spokesman did not provide any information on the causes of the crash or the nature of the US aircraft. The US military also did not comment initially.
Kuwait's authorities had discovered the crew members of the US aircraft and taken them to hospital. According to the state agency Kuna, their condition was stable. They are coordinating directly with the US troops in the country about the circumstances of the incident, the background to which is now being investigated.
Several videos showing the crashes have been circulating on the internet. Among other things, they show a fighter plane circling and crashing in flames. Other videos also show local residents carrying a US pilot to safety in the trunk of their car. Images from the crash site also show a parachute on the ground, apparently after an emergency landing by the pilot.
The US news channel CNN localized videos and reported that the crash occurred a few kilometers from the US airbase Ali al-Salam. It was an F-15 or F/A-18 fighter plane, although Kuwait's armed forces also use such aircraft.
The US military, which has around 13,500 troops stationed in the small state on the Persian Gulf, did not comment initially. It was also unclear whether it was an accident, a launch by an Iranian missile or accidental firing by its own troops.
According to the responsible regional command, three US soldiers have been killed and five others seriously injured in the US military operation against Iran. In its counter-attacks, Iran had targeted US military bases in the Gulf region, among others. Among others, Kuwait, a regional neighbor of Iran, has come under fire.
