The death sentence against a renowned Iranian activist has been overturned by the country's Supreme Court, according to her lawyer. The case against labor rights activist Sharifeh Mohammadi is to be re-examined in a new trial, lawyer Ami Raissian told the daily newspaper "Shargh".

Mohammadi was arrested in Rasht in the north of the country in December last year and has been detained in various prisons since then. In July, she was sentenced to death by a revolutionary court in Rasht for armed resistance against the Islamic Republic.

Mohammadi's family then hired a new team of lawyers in order to force an appeal. Before her arrest, Mohammadi had campaigned vehemently for the rights of workers in the province of Gilan on the Caspian Sea.
