The Green Party's Alfonso Gomez (incumbent, 16,188 votes) came second, followed by Joëlle Bertossa (SP, new, 15,324 votes). Marjorie de Chastonay (Greens, new) came fourth with 13,905 votes. She therefore has a good chance of replacing the outgoing Green Party member Frédérique Perler. Fifth place went to Marie Barbey-Chappuis (13,688), who is currently a centrist municipal councillor.
Natacha Buffet-Desfayes (FDP, new, 11,810 votes) is in sixth place, followed by the far-left politician Tobias Schnebli (new, 9233) and the SVP candidate Vincent Schaller (new, 8638). The second round of voting will take place on April 13. If the Left-Greens win four seats in mid-April, the current composition of the Geneva city government will be preserved.
No more majority in parliament
In Geneva's city parliament, the Left-Greens will lose their previous majority of 44 seats, in particular due to a sharp decline in support for the Greens. The Greens lost six seats compared to the last elections and now have twelve. The SP lost one seat and now has 18, while the far-left party "Ensemble à Gauche" gained two seats and now has 9, giving the left-wing Greens 39 of the 80 seats.
In the center and right of center, the FDP won 12 seats, two fewer than five years ago. The center and the Green Liberals together won 10 seats, two more than the former CVP five years ago. The SVP gained three seats and now has ten seats. The Mouvement Citoyens Genevois won 9 seats - two more than before.
The new Libertés et Justice sociale party of Geneva State Councillor Pierre Maudet did not reach the required threshold of seven percent of the vote to enter the city parliament with 5.81 percent.
