During his first visit to Ukraine, which is under attack from Russia, the new Lithuanian head of government pledged his country's continued support. "Lithuania will continue to make every effort for our common goal - the victory of Ukraine and a just and lasting peace in Europe," said Gintautas Paluckas.

On his first visit abroad since taking office, Paluckas and almost his entire cabinet of ministers traveled to Kiev for the first Lithuanian-Ukrainian government consultations.

With a view to the efforts to end the war, Paluckas warned against falling into the "appeasement trap". "Forcing Ukraine to negotiate would be immoral, unwise and would only delay the next act of Russian aggression," he wrote on Platform X after his meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi. The term appeasement is used to describe a policy of concessions, appeasement and restraint towards aggressors.

There are concerns in the EU and among European NATO states that Donald Trump, as US President, could try to pressure Ukraine and Russia into negotiations.

Ukraine has been fending off a Russian invasion for more than 1,000 days with Western help. Lithuania is one of Kiev's key supporters. The new government of the Baltic EU and NATO country, which took office last week, promises in its government program to provide Ukraine with military aid amounting to 0.25 percent of its economic output.
