These include groups that fought alongside interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa. Another is attributed to the camp of former President Bashar al-Assad.
In addition to four militia leaders, two businessmen were also sanctioned. They are said to have helped finance the activities of the Assad government, which was toppled just over a year ago. The sanctions include the freezing of assets and a travel ban to the UK.
Around 1,400 dead in retaliatory actions in coastal region
During the civil war in Syria, which lasted almost 14 years, countless people lost their lives as a result of the brutal actions of government forces and their supporters. But even after the fall of Assad, there were violent clashes in various parts of the country, with some serious attacks on religious minorities.
In spring alone, around 1,400 people were killed in the Syrian coastal region, most of whom belonged to the Alawite minority, to which Assad also belongs. Many of them are said to have been civilians. In the summer, fighting broke out in the Suwaida region, where many Druze live. This raised doubts as to whether interim President al-Sharaa could keep his promise to guarantee security for all people in Syria.
The British Foreign Secretary, Yvette Cooper, emphasized that they are continuing to work with the transitional government in Damascus to promote economic recovery and a Syria that gives all its inhabitants a voice.
