Lucerne Councillor of States Damian Müller does not want to become FDP President. The 40-year-old announced this on Friday evening. An internal party search committee is looking for a successor to Thierry Burkart and is accepting nominations until August 20.

Müller has represented the canton of Lucerne in the Council of States since 2015. He was long considered the top favorite to succeed Burkart.

Müller's decision to stand down was first reported by CH Media. He did not want to be a full-time politician, but always wanted to keep one foot in the working world, said the PR specialist with a first degree in business.

His decision to resign was not an easy one, Müller said in the main "Tagesschau" edition of Swiss television SRF on Friday evening. But if he became party president, he would have to "put one hundred percent into it". He continued: "With my mandate as a member of the Council of States and my professional development, there would have been no room for all that. You have to be honest with yourself."

FDP President Thierry Burkart is stepping down from office in October after four years.
