Nobel Peace Prize laureate María Corina Machado has reported an emotional reunion with her children after her trip from hiding in Venezuela to Oslo.

"I couldn't sleep last night and kept thinking about that first moment when I saw my children," said the 58-year-old on the verge of tears at a press conference with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.

She had longed for this for many weeks and wondered which of the three she would hug first. "I hugged all three of them at the same time and it was one of the most extraordinary, touching moments of my life," she said. "I will never forget it, because at the end of the day, I am just one of millions of Venezuelan mothers who long to embrace their children."

Night-time arrival after a long time underground

Machado arrived in the Norwegian capital during the night - barely half a day after the official Nobel Prize ceremony at Oslo City Hall. Her daughter Ana Corina Sosa Machado accepted the Nobel Peace Prize on her behalf, which the Venezuelan opposition leader had been awarded for her commitment to democracy in her authoritarian country.

Before her trip to Oslo, Machado had been living largely underground for more than a year. The Venezuelan public prosecutor's office had announced that Machado would be considered a fugitive if she left the country. If she returns to Venezuela, she now faces serious consequences such as arrest or an entry ban.
