A few days before the planned meeting between Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump, French President Emmanuel Macron has urged the inclusion of the Ukrainians. "The future of Ukraine cannot be decided without the Ukrainians, who have been fighting for their freedom and security for more than three years now", Macron wrote on X. As their security is also at stake, the Europeans must also be part of a solution.

Macron had previously spoken to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on the phone. He had also exchanged views with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, according to reports from Paris. They remain determined to support Ukraine, Macron wrote. After the talks with Macron, Zelensky said that Ukraine, France and all partners were ready to work as productively as possible for real peace.

Trump wants to meet with Putin on Friday in the US state of Alaska. According to media reports, Putin wants Russia to take full control of the eastern Ukrainian regions of Donetsk and Luhansk, among other things. Zelenskyi firmly rejects such territorial cessions.
