French President Emmanuel Macron has invited supporters of Ukraine to another summit in Paris next Thursday. In the presence of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi, the aim is to finalize work to support the Ukrainian armed forces and to define what contribution European armed forces could make to security guarantees for the country, Macron said in Brussels. The aim was to prevent a renewed Russian invasion.
Macron went on to say that Ukraine needed credible support to ensure that any ceasefire would hold in the future. This would also strengthen its position in possible negotiations.
Ground troops from the UK and France?
The meeting in Paris is intended to build on the progress made during consultations at military level in London on Thursday. A good two dozen European and other states took part in these talks. In addition to heads of state and government of European NATO countries, representatives of Australia, Canada, New Zealand and Turkey have also taken part in previous talks of the "coalition of the willing" at political level.
One of the issues being discussed is whether and under what conditions European armed forces could contribute to securing a ceasefire. Great Britain and France have shown themselves to be open in principle to sending ground troops to Ukraine. However, they are insisting that the USA provide security in the event of an escalation. The Australian head of government, Anthony Albanese, has stated that his country is also considering sending troops.
