French President Emmanuel Macron has proposed to US President Donald Trump that the G7 states meet with Russia and Denmark in Paris on Thursday. This emerged from private text messages between Macron and Trump, which the US President shared on the Truth Social platform. The Élysée Palace confirmed the authenticity of the messages to Deutsche Presse-Agentur.

On Tuesday morning, Trump published images on his online mouthpiece that are said to show text messages from Macron. In it, Macron suggests a meeting of the major Western industrialized nations in Paris after the end of the World Economic Forum in Davos. According to him, representatives from Ukraine, Denmark, Syria and Russia should also attend.

Trump is expected to arrive in the Swiss Alpine resort on Wednesday, where he will give a speech on the same day. News reports also indicate that Macron has invited Trump to a dinner in Paris before he flies back to Washington.

Russia has been a member of the group of Western industrialized nations, known as the G8, since 1998. After the annexation of Crimea in 2014, Russia was excluded and the group was renamed the G7. In addition to the USA, France, Great Britain, Italy, Canada, Japan and Germany are also members.

Macron emphasizes common goals on Syria and Iran

According to sources close to Macron, France is determined to make this year's G7 presidency a useful contribution to dialog and cooperation. Conflicts in which France and the USA are pulling in the same direction were emphasized. In Syria, France is working together with the Americans for the unity and territorial integrity of Syria and compliance with the ceasefire and remains loyal to its allies in the fight against the terrorist militia "Islamic State". In Iran, France demands that the Iranian authorities respect fundamental freedoms and stands by those who defend them.

In the private text messages to Trump, Macron noted that France and the United States were "completely in agreement" on the future course in Syria. They could also achieve "great things" in Iran.

Macron to Trump: Don't understand what you're up to in Greenland

At the same time, Macron complained in the published news that he did not understand what Trump was up to with regard to Greenland. The US president wants to persuade Denmark to sell the Arctic island to the USA. As a sign of solidarity with Denmark, Germany, France and other countries had sent soldiers on an exploratory mission to Greenland. The Republican then announced on Saturday that he would impose punitive tariffs on goods from Germany and other European NATO countries from February 1. In doing so, he wants to break the resistance to the sale of Greenland to the USA.

With regard to the Greenland conflict, Macron's circle stated that respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states is non-negotiable for France and that France's commitment as a Nato ally for security in the Arctic remains unchanged.

Trump wants to talk to other parties in Greenland conflict

Shortly beforehand, Trump had announced a meeting of the parties involved in the Greenland conflict in Davos. The announced talks were preceded by a telephone call with Nato Secretary General Mark Rutte, he wrote on Truth Social. The Republican left open who would actually take part in the meeting. The talks are likely to take place on the fringes of the World Economic Forum.

Not only private messages from Macron published

Trump also published a private message that NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte had written to him with regard to the talks in Davos. It read: "Mr. President, dear Donald - what you have achieved in Syria is incredible. I will use my media appearances in Davos to highlight your work there, in Gaza and in Ukraine. I am determined to find a way forward on the Greenland issue. I can't wait to see you. Your Mark." An Alliance spokeswoman confirmed to Deutsche Presse-Agentur that the message was authentic.
