President Emmanuel Macron wants to appoint a new prime minister in France today. Who will become head of government in the politically divided country and whether the resigned Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu will stay on after all was an open question until the last minute.

In any case, Macron is under time pressure because if highly indebted France wants to get a budget for the coming year in place in time, it must be submitted to parliament by next Monday at the latest, and by the prime minister. This is stipulated by constitutional deadlines. Failure to do so would further block the already politically paralyzed country and hamper it economically.

France wants to get the budget off the ground at all costs

The current Minister of Economy and Finance, Roland Lescure, assured that France, which is in financial difficulties, will definitely draw up a budget for 2026 and also meet its European obligations. There is a majority of MPs in France who want stability and agree on one point: "We need a budget for 2026 and, very importantly, a budget that honors the commitments we have made to our European friends, and that is exactly what will happen," said Lescure at a meeting in Luxembourg.

The previous French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu only became Prime Minister four weeks ago and resigned on Monday following tensions within the government. Macron had then tasked him with finding a way out of the crisis within two days. After concluding talks with the parties, Lecornu expressed cautious optimism.

Direction of the future government still unclear

President Macron has so far given no indication as to whether there will now be a prime minister from the left-wing camp and how the future government will be structured. There is a basis for creating political stability in the country and adopting a budget by the end of the year, according to the Élysée Palace.
