A video distributed by the White House on the X platform showed Maduro being led away in handcuffs and surrounded by officers from the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) in a corridor of the building.
According to US media reports, he is to be held in the Metropolitan Detention Center, a federal detention facility in Brooklyn, for the duration of his pre-trial detention.
According to media reports, Maduro had previously landed at an airport in the US state of New York on a plane operated by the federal authorities and was taken from there by helicopter to the detention center in the East Coast metropolis. The US military had arrested him on Saturday during a major military operation in Venezuela.
Maduro must stand trial in New York. The ousted authoritarian head of state and his wife Cilia Flores, who was also arrested during the military operation, are accused of "conspiracy to commit drug terrorism" and "conspiracy to import cocaine", among other things.
