There was no opening ceremony or special program to mark the start. According to Magdeburger Weihnachtsmarkt GmbH, more than 140 traders and showmen will be taking part again this year.
More than 250,000 euros have been invested in security
This year, there were six more applications for the 115 new stands to be allocated than last year, namely a total of 153. The security precautions have also been significantly increased following the attack last year. According to the city, around 250,000 euros had already been invested in new security systems such as concrete blocks in the run-up to the event.
After discussions about the security concept and a temporary refusal of approval by the city, the administration and organizers made further improvements.
Parallel to the opening, trial against driver of death continues
Eleven months ago to the day, Taleb al-Abdulmohsen, who was 50 years old at the time, raced through the Christmas market in Magdeburg in a 340 hp rental car. Six people died and more than 300 were injured. The man from Saudi Arabia, who until the crime was working as a doctor in the East German state of Saxony-Anhalt in a correctional facility for mentally ill offenders, was very active on social networks. He was classified as a prolific writer by the authorities due to a large number of reports and correspondence.
While the Christmas market opened on the Alter Markt in front of the town hall, the trial against the driver of the car that killed him continued just a few kilometers away in a branch of the Magdeburg district court.
