The respondents named sport, leisure activities, hobbies and social contacts as helpful measures. It is striking that the acceptance of professional help has increased significantly, according to the Swiss Health Promotion Foundation on Friday, World Mental Health Day. Eleven percent cited professional help as a resource. Two years ago, the figure was just one percent.
According to the health promotion organization, people most often sought help from their close social environment or from specialists such as psychologists, psychiatrists or family doctors when experiencing long-term lows. Well-known support services such as Pro Juventute, Dargebotene Hand (143) or the children and young people's helpline 147 are the best-known points of contact.
The study shows differences between the age groups. 65 to 95-year-olds turn to their family doctor more often, while 15 to 34-year-olds use digital services such as self-help websites or apps more frequently. In general, women use professional support services more often than men.
There are still obstacles that prevent people from seeking help, the foundation continued. One of the main obstacles is the feeling of not wanting to burden others with their own problems. Many people find it embarrassing or uncomfortable to talk about their mental health problems. It is therefore important to explain that sharing feelings or seeking help is legitimate and relieving.
