In the US city of Minneapolis, one person has died after being shot by a federal officer, according to the Department of Homeland Security. At the beginning of January, an ICE immigration officer in Minneapolis shot and killed a 37-year-old woman in her car. The case triggered widespread horror and protests. The government described the action as self-defense, while Democrats and demonstrators spoke of excessive force and a lack of transparency in the investigation.

Governor: "terrible shooting incident"

The governor of the state of Minnesota, Tim Walz, wrote on X on Saturday that there had been another terrible shooting incident by a federal officer. He had spoken to the White House, the governor wrote. "Minnesota is fed up. This is despicable," Walz continued. President Donald Trump must end the operation, he said. "Pull the thousands of violent, untrained officers out of Minnesota. Now."

The city of Minneapolis posted on X that they were aware of reports of a shooting incident in the city involving federal officers and were working to provide details.

At least 300 protesters gathered at the scene of the incident in Minneapolis within a short time, the New York Times reported, citing eyewitnesses. The officers also used tear gas and pepper spray.

Tighter deportation policy under Trump

The ICE operations are part of the intensified deportation policy in Trump's second term in office. According to the US government, around 3,000 people have been arrested since the intensified operations began in Minnesota. Several lawsuits by local authorities against the federal authorities' actions are currently pending in court.
