US President Donald Trump has held out the prospect of US help in the face of mass protests in Iran. "Iran is striving for FREEDOM, perhaps like never before. The USA is ready to help!!!", he wrote on his Truth Social platform.

He also shared a post there that Republican US Senator Lindsey Graham had published on X. In it, Graham warned the Iranian leadership that their brutality towards the Iranian people would not remain without consequences.

In another post, the US senator also wrote to the Iranian people: "Your long nightmare is about to end." Trump and all those who love freedom had noticed their courage and determination to end their oppression. May God help all those making sacrifices in Iran, Graham continued. "Help is on the way." He did not explain exactly what he meant by this.

Trump had previously warned the state leadership against killing demonstrators. "I've told them that if they start killing people, which they like to do during their riots, which are frequent, we will punish them severely," he said in an episode of "The Hugh Hewitt Show" podcast published on Thursday. The US government is following the situation closely.

Trump had also previously emphasized that the US would come to the rescue if Iran were to kill peaceful demonstrators. Trump's new post differs in that he does not explicitly link the aid to violence against demonstrators.

Report: First US talks about possible attack

Meanwhile, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing US officials, that Trump administration officials had held initial talks on how an attack on Iran could be carried out if deemed necessary to carry out Trump's threats. Options for possible targets were also discussed, such as a large-scale airstrike on several military targets in Iran. According to the newspaper, however, there is still no consensus on how the USA should proceed. Nor have military equipment and personnel been moved in preparation for an attack, it said.
