Mass-Voll President Nicolas Rimoldi is running for the FDP party presidency. With him as president, the FDP will find its way back to "freedom, love of the homeland and its old strength", he announced on Wednesday. His candidacy is unlikely to stand a chance as he is not a party member.

"The measure is full. Switzerland is on the brink of destruction. We are losing everything we once stood for: Identity, freedom, sovereignty, neutrality, subsidiarity and direct democracy," Rimoldi wrote in a statement. He does not accept this. The FDP is at a crossroads: "Either I lead it back to liberal politics, or green homeland forgetters take over and drive the FDP to the wall with an EU compass."

Rimoldi, who opposes the coronavirus measures, left the FDP in September 2021. At the time, the FDP announced its support for an extension of the Covid certificate for vaccinated, recovered and tested people. The FDP is no longer a liberal party, wrote Rimoldi, who was born in 1995. He was once Vice President of the Lucerne Young Liberals.

An internal party search committee was accepting candidates for the FDP party presidency until Wednesday. FDP party president Thierry Burkart is stepping down in October.
